Toyota named worlds greenest brand

Toyota is the worlds greenest brand, according to a new global survey from the international brand consultancy Interbrand. The first Best Global Green Brands, published this week, takes into account environmental performance coupled with public perception of a brands environmental sustainability its green profile to produce a Green Performance Score.

Based on data collected from the worlds leading markets, including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, USA, Japan, Brazil and India, the report gives Toyota a top score of 64.19 points, ahead of 3M in second place.

The Interbrand report says that Toyota is a leading example of making the environment a core management priority, while also engaging in a meaningful way with audiences around the world.

Toyotas market-leading development of full hybrid technology is a key contributor to Toyotas strong green performance, according to the report, notably with Prius now in its third generation. Since 1997, Toyota and Lexus have amassed more than 3.2 million hybrid vehicle sales worldwide*.

Toyotas long-term, well-to-wheel approach towards sustainable operations is reflected in recent initiatives in the UK. The publishing of the report coincides with the official switch-on of a large-scale solar power system at the companys car plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire, a facility that already enjoys special status as one of Toyotas global eco-plants, leading the way in cleaner and more efficient manufacturing and operations.

Burnaston is also a standard-bearer in Europe for hybrid vehicle production, as the manufacturing centre for the full hybrid Auris hatchback.

Elsewhere in Europe, Toyota has recently installed a solar wall at its factory in Valenciennes, France, and it plans to install wind turbines at its vehicle logistics centre in Zeebrugge, Belgium.

The Best Global Green Brands reports measurement methodology was developed by Interbrand together with Deloitte, with the Green Performance Score designed to be applicable across differing industries. While compiling the report, Interbrand also interviewed some 10,000 consumers across 10 of the worlds largest markets to gauge consumer perceptions of a brands green performance. Performance data were sourced from publicly available information as well as data from Thomson Reuters ASSET4.

Toyota employees donate to Alabama and Mississippi tornado disaster relief efforts

In the aftermath following the tornados that struck parts of the southern United States earlier this spring, Toyotas Japan employees asked how they could reciprocate the gesture of giving to those in need.

Today, Toyota and its Japan employees announced a $330,000 donation to the tornado relief efforts to be evenly distributed between the disaster relief programs in Alabama and Mississippi.

Commenting on the new donation, Steve St. Angelo, executive vice president of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc., said, We are grateful to our colleagues in Japan for their generosity to the tornado relief efforts particularly during their own difficult time following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Many of our Japanese colleagues and their families have worked and lived in parts of the U.S. where the tornados struck and many more regularly work with affected manufacturing plants, suppliers and dealerships in the region. They wanted to help and their donation demonstrates the true human spirit of reaching out to those in need. We deeply appreciate their thoughtfulness.

Toyota and its North American employees in May donated $1 million dollars to the American Red Cross for tornado relief efforts in all affected states and regions across the country.

Toyota inaugurated the TME Technical Centre in Europe

Toyota Motor Europe (TME) inaugurated its own proving ground today at the TME Technical Centre, in Zaventem, Belgium. The state-of-the-art Zaventem Proving Ground, aimed at strengthening Toyotas European vehicle research and development, took two-and-a-half years to complete. The latest expansion represents an investment of 47 million (42 million) and demonstrates Toyotas long-term commitment to Europe.

The new proving ground will play a vital role in Toyotas strategy for developing new models for the European small and compact car segments. Together with its accompanying facilities it covers an area of 65,000m at the technical centre, which measures 187,000m in total. Toyota employs 770 staff at the technical centre itself, of which 430 are engaged in research and development functions. To date, Toyota has invested 167 million (149 million) in the Zaventem facility, including the latest investment of 47 million (42 million) for the purchase and construction of the new proving ground.

Didier Leroy, TME President and CEO said: The European automotive market is one of the most competitive in the world and our technical centre is already a key facility in Toyotas global R&D organisation. Thanks to the new proving ground, we will make use of our unique positioning and our facilities as a laboratory for innovations in a faster and more efficient way, so that we can develop the right car for our European customers, right here, in the heart of Europe.

As well as a 1.4 kilometre (0.8-mile) oval test track, the multi-purpose proving ground also features a 90-metre diameter skid pad, test roads to monitor noise and harshness and a lane for brake tests. The facilities allow Toyotas engineers to perform a wide variety of tests such as ride comfort, road noise and vibration, vehicle durability, cornering, engine performance and brake performance. Situated close to the main workshops and offices at the technical centre, the proving ground will handle most of the vehicle testing performed on site.

The environmental impact of the construction work was kept to a minimum. About 98 per cent of the excavation and building waste (approximately 36,000 tonnes) created during the project was recycled on-site. The development was integrated into its natural surroundings and a detailed noise study was conducted to ensure there is no disturbance caused to neighbours.

Llamada a revisin para los Toyota Tundra

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc, today announced it will conduct a voluntary safety recall on approximately 51,000, 2011 model year Tundra trucks to inspect the rear drive shaft. The rear drive shaft in an estimated 0.05 percent of the vehicles may include a component (slip yoke) that could break due to improper casting during the foundry process.

Toyota is aware of one drive shaft slip yoke failure in a customer-owned vehicle. There are no reports of accidents or injuries associated with this condition. No other Lexus or Toyota vehicles are involved in this recall.

Owners of the involved vehicles will receive a letter advising them of this recall by first class mail starting in May 2011. Toyota will also post this information on its website.

Toyota dealers will be instructed to perform an inspection to identify a specific "production lot" number located on the rear drive shaft. Based upon the inspection results, in a limited number of cases, the rear drive shaft may need to be replaced.

The inspection is estimated to take ten minutes. If the rear drive shaft needs to be replaced, the repair will take more time depending on the dealer workload. The inspection and / or replacement will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner.
